During the Holy Year 1920, a new composition of the St. James’ Hymn was made (lyrics by Dr Barcia Caballero, a doctor from Compostela; music by M. Soler, the chapel master of the cathedral). Until de present day, it is sung during the swinging of the Botafumeiro.
O Saint Leader, Patron of all the Spanish kingdoms,
friend of the Lord:
defend your beloved disciples,
protect your nation.
The victorious Christian weapons
we come to temper
in the holy and lighted flame
of your devout altar.
Constant and certain,
as that column
the Mother of Jesus gave you,
it will be in Spain
the Holy Christian Faith,
the celestial good You bequeathed to us.
Glory to St. James,
distinguished patron!
We, your grateful sons,
we bless you today.
At your feet, prostrate, we offer you
the warmest pledge of our love.
Defend your beloved disciples!
Protect your nation!
Protect your nation!
